Operations & Maintenance

Maintenance Services

The Maintenance Department plays a crucial role in ensuring the community’s well-being by developing and maintaining its public infrastructure and facilities. Roads, water, sewage treatment, public buildings, and parks—all depend on the skilled oversight and care of the maintenance crew.

As well, this department provides equipment rental and maintains a gravel pit available to community members engaged in construction.

Capital Projects

Lax̱g̱alts’ap Village Government’s goal is to provide all the amenities required to service the needs of the community. Our capital program is responsible for all community assets, such as roads, water and sewer systems, parks, and publicly owned buildings. Our work includes replacement of old assets and major maintenance of those assets to prolong their life and usability.

A highlight in 2024 was the opening of the Ank’idaa Community Recreation and Leisure Park, which features a 15-station splash park, change room, playground, elder’s fitness area, basketball court, walking loop, seating areas, gazebo, and a parking area.

Housing

The capital program supports community housing goals. From the year 2000 – 2004 the department built 30 new rental housing units and developed the Juniper subdivision expansion, creating 13 new lots available for community members.

Honouring Nisga’a Culture

Nisga’a culture informs and is embedded in all capital projects. Northwest Coast Indigenous art is incorporated into design, commissioned for signage, and hung inside public buildings. For instance, the design of the splash park was based on an image of a fish jumping out of water, and a Nisga’a artist was engaged to create the logo.
